Short description
The modern fire instructor faces a growing challenge. Knowledge of fire development, ventilation, building behaviour and fire tactics is evolving faster than ever. But knowledge alone is not enough.
A professional instructor must be able to interpret what they see, understand the operational consequences and translate this knowledge into meaningful learning experiences for others.
In this program, the term fire instructor refers to the person responsible for facilitating exercises and training for qualified and experienced fire service personnel.
The official language of the course is English.

Programme
The Advanced Fire Instructor program is designed for experienced fire instructors who want to further develop themselves as both subject-matter experts and professional instructors or exercise facilitators.
The program builds on established CFBT principles and combines current fire science with practical experience, exercise design and instructional skills.
The core principle is simple:
An instructor teaches skills and transfers knowledge.
An exercise facilitator teaches others to understand what they are seeing.
Throughout the program, theory and practical exercises are continuously combined. Participants observe, analyse, experiment, practise and reflect throughout the week.
Rather than moving from the classroom to the practical environment, participants move from practical experience back to theory — using what they observe in realistic fire scenarios to deepen their understanding.
The Advanced Fire Instructor program brings together fire science, practical firefighting experience, observation, exercise design and instructional skills.
Participants are challenged to look beyond simply what happens and develop the ability to explain why it happens, what the consequences are and how this can be transformed into an effective learning experience. Understand fire. > Interpret what you see. > Teach others how to see.

Day 1
• Half-day classroom session
• Burn Flow Path – Leren & Beleven programme
• Burn Flow Path – under-ventilated fire in the Large Volume Cell (LVC)
• Burn Flow Path – fuel-controlled fire
• One support instructor prepares the fire compartments
Day 2
• Half-day classroom session and cold exercises
• Half-day practical exercises in Fire Room 5 and the under-ventilated LVC
• One support instructor prepares the fire compartments
Day 3
• ¼ day classroom session
• ¼ day preparation of the LVC
• ¼ day modelling: travelling fires and façade fires
• ¼ day fire development in the LVC – fuel-controlled fire
• One support instructor prepares the fire compartments and sets up the models
Day 4
• External site visit
• Evening dinner at a special location
• Practical assignment during the dinner
Day 5
The final day is not primarily about fire. It is about the person who helps others understand fire. An instructor continuously influences the learning process of participants. By asking questions, observing behaviour, providing feedback and facilitating exercises, the instructor has a major influence on what participants ultimately learn.
During the final day, participants take responsibility for parts of the instruction and exercise facilitation themselves.
Participants can prepare for the day by familiarising themselves with the Leren & Beleven programmes. They may also work in small groups to independently design and deliver an exercise. Participants are observed during their instructional activities and receive professional feedback on their performance as an instructor.

The goal is not simply to know more about fire. The goal is to become better at helping others understand what they see, why it happens and what it means for firefighting operations.
